    Three ways to rest the mind so you can experience the joy of mental stillness. The simplest, most fundamental, most basic, and most important meditative skill of all is the ability to settle the mind.

    1) The First method is anchoring.

    2) If anchoring is too hard for you, here is the second method: resting.

    3) If resting is still too hard for you, here is the third method: being.

    All three practices above, and all practices that settle the mind in general, have two features in common: they all involve some degree of mental stillness and attention to the present moment. Because of that, they all lead to the basic meditative state, which is the state where the mind is alert and relaxed at the same time. When the mind is alert and relaxed, over time, it will calm down the same way the snowflakes in the snow globe settle down, and the mind abides in a state where it is both calm and clear.

Dissections can be spontaneous or traumatic from causes as varied as a high-speed car crash to a sporting activity such as heavy weightlifting, even golf, tennis, or yoga, to ordinary activities such as sneezing and coughing. Dissection can also occur with cervical hyperextension or hyperrotation. It's been associated with CMT—cervical spine manipulation therapy—including adjustments by chiropractors. That's the point of this new report published in Stroke, which highlights the link between neck manipulation and cervical dissection.

    Okay. Real story. Real patient. My patient. A new patient, a middle-aged executive, comes in with severe neck pain and headache worse than any headache he's ever had before. Earlier that day he'd seen a chiropractor. The diagnosis was left vertebral artery dissection, revealed by CT angiograms. My thought at the time was concern that manipulation by the chiropractor probably had a role. That was 10 years ago.

    Neck pain is common, especially because we spend so much time typing on computers. Neck pain has many going to massages, maybe seeing chiropractors. But the lesson I learned from my patient is reinforced by this study. Be gentle with your neck. To paraphrase the researchers' findings, although a direct cause-and-effect relationship between neck manipulation and cervical artery dissection has not been established and the absolute risk is probably low, cervical artery dissection can result in serious neurologic injury.

    Back to my patient. After 6 months of blood thinners he fully recovered, but he hasn't been back to see the chiropractor. The moral of this story: Be gentle with your neck and be aware of the link between cervical manipulation and cervical artery dissection.

    Reducing or removing the obstacles to happiness allows happiness to emerge. Similar to dieting, knowing what not to eat is as important as knowing what you should eat. Knowing what makes you unhappy and working to remove or diminish those things helps immensely. Gretchen Rubin is the author of The Happiness Project, (4) a book and a blog about her adventures learning to be happier. In a Psychology Today article she says:

    Although it’s helpful to focus on the positive, to count your blessings, and to remind yourself of what makes you happy, it’s also very important to pay attention to what’s undermining your happiness. (5)

    Rubin strongly suggests that you ask yourself what the obstacles are to your happiness. When you identify an obstacle be specific. What exactly is bothering you? Why is this having such an impact? And finally, what do your need to do to change your behavior?

    Obstacles could include:

    Equating success with money and status
    Blaming others for your unhappiness, it’s always someone else’s fault
    Being afraid
    Staying in toxic relationships
    Not being honest with yourself and others
    Focusing your life obsessively on making good impressions
    Neglecting introspection and awareness of yourself, of your values and beliefs
    Needing to make everyone else happy
    Thinking life should always be wonderful.

    When we are generous in welcoming people and sharing something with them—some food, a place in our homes, our time—not only do we no longer remain poor: we are enriched. (7)

    The modern ideals of total autonomy and radical self-reliance are profoundly misplaced. It is incumbent on us to either change or move away from toxic personal and social relationships. Our happiness and health depend on it.

    Remember, happiness comes from the inside and manifests itself in loving personal relationships and our connection with the world. It is of the utmost importance that we seek out people and communities that offer us love and understanding and to which we can offer the same. It is important that we work to see that all people regardless of ethnicity, race or sexual orientation have the opportunity to live without fear and enjoy the fruits of loving relationships.     The problem: This is a common problem and caused my many factors. One contributing factor may be that hip flexors and medial hip rotators are weak and unable to balance the hip muscles allowing for an outward turn of the feet. In addition, the lateral muscles of the leg are too tight.

    Massage Therapy: Perform lenghtening and friction techniques with the massage therapy client for the lateral hip muscles and use neuromuscular techniques on the weakened medial hip muscles.

    Self fix: Get into a pushup position with your feet resting on a stability ball. Without rounding your lower back, tuck your knees under your torso, using your feet to roll the ball toward your body, then back to the starting position. That’s one rep. Do two or three sets of six to 12 reps daily.

    Over time, poor posture takes a serious toll on the spine, shoulders, hips, and knees. In fact, it can cause a cascade of structural flaws that lead to back and joint pain, reduced flexibility, and compromised muscles, all of which limits ability to burn fat, build strength and feel good.

    Poor posture habits can cause nerve constriction. The most common effect of poor posture are sore muscles. Poor posture muscles have to work harder to keep the spine stabilized and protected. The extra work on these muscles can cause muscle tightness and fatigue. This is exactly why there is a need for massage therapists and fitness trainers. As massage therapists we know that as the spine changes in shape, the resulting movements or subluxations can put pressure on the surrounding spinal nerves. Because the nerves that connect to the spine come from all over the body, these pinched nerves can not only cause neck and back pain but may also cause pain in other unrelated areas of the body.

    ROUNDED SHOULDERS

    Problem: The sternoclavicular joints are unstable, therefore the body recruits the pectoris minor muscles to stabilize the joint. This brings the shoulder forward. With the shoulder forward, the upper trap turns on helping to support the shoulder from the neck. There is also a relationship with the thoracic spine & the sternum. The exercise described recruits global muscles to do the work of the postural muscles what happens is that for a short period of time holding through these muscles works then the muscles fatigue and the person falls back into the poor posture.

    Remedy: Have your massage therapy client lie facedown on the massage table, with each arm at a 90-degree angle in the high-five position. Without changing the elbow angle, raise both arms by pulling the shoulders back and give a nice stretch by squeezing the shoulder blades together. Hold for five seconds. Explain to your massage therapy client to do this at home. Instruct to perform two or three sets of 12 reps daily. Changing posture has to happen by working the postural muscles which are deep to the gluteal muscles.
