    Movies and bad tv have shown us that by simply pressing down on certain parts of the body can cause unconsciousness or even death. But, how much of this is actually true? Massage therapists be ware or maybe not.

    Pressure points are sensitive areas on the body that can be used as a wonderful healing technique, or a way to cause pain. Whether or not the points can actually lead to death is unknown or usually dismissed by many scientists.

    Pressure points originated in Japanese Martial Arts; a Japanese samurai introduced the idea into martial arts fighting Yoshimitsu, a Japanese Samurai introduced this idea first, he dissected the bodies of men killed in war to better understand the little spots in their bodies. While pressure points may exist as sensitive spots on the body that can aid in fighting and healing, touching or pressing on them probably will not kill you.

    Case reports suggest that incidents [in which pressure or trauma is applied to the carotid artery, and someone dies] are mostly accidents, more often than not unrelated to martial arts training or theory The question remains: Can some dim mak practitioners achieve these results at will? Dissection can also occur with cervical hyperextension or hyperrotation. It's been associated with CMT—cervical spine manipulation therapy—including adjustments by chiropractors. That's the point of this new report published in Stroke, which highlights the link between neck manipulation and cervical dissection.

    Okay. Real story. Real patient. My patient. A new patient, a middle-aged executive, comes in with severe neck pain and headache worse than any headache he's ever had before. Earlier that day he'd seen a chiropractor. The diagnosis was left vertebral artery dissection, revealed by CT angiograms. My thought at the time was concern that manipulation by the chiropractor probably had a role. That was 10 years ago.

    Neck pain is common, especially because we spend so much time typing on computers. Neck pain has many going to massages, maybe seeing chiropractors. But the lesson I learned from my patient is reinforced by this study. Be gentle with your neck. To paraphrase the researchers' findings, although a direct cause-and-effect relationship between neck manipulation and cervical artery dissection has not been established and the absolute risk is probably low, cervical artery dissection can result in serious neurologic injury.

    Back to my patient. After 6 months of blood thinners he fully recovered, but he hasn't been back to see the chiropractor. The moral of this story: Be gentle with your neck and be aware of the link between cervical manipulation and cervical artery dissection.

    Think back to the last time you had a major cold or flu – the last time you had a fever and body aches so bad your hair hurt. The thousand daggers in your throat, the puffy, burning eyes, the roaring headache, the plugged sinuses and clogged lungs, the crippling fatigue. In the throes, you likely couldn’t imagine (as most of us do) what it was ever like to be healthy. You could scarcely remember what life had been like three days ago when you were lifting weights, lifting your kids, laughing at work, entertaining at home, sleeping soundly. Fast forward, and it’s a Bermuda Triangle of mental discouragement and physical misery. And this is just a cold or flu… (Many people deal with so much worse….) Still, it’s a relatable illustration of an all too common truth: we tend to take our health for granted until it’s suddenly gone.

    Three days prior we may have felt good about our workout performance – or finished it off grudgingly (or opted to skip it entirely.) We may have gotten out of bed noticing we’d had a pretty good night’s sleep – or already been too lost in negative anticipation of the work day ahead to let ourselves feel good. We might’ve appreciated having the energy to keep up with the kids during some sledding or tag at the park – or felt distracted by stress and spent much of the time managing the world on our phones or running through imagined conversations in our heads. Is anything sounding familiar? In a regular day we barely if at all notice our health – until or unless its limitations disrupt our routine or intentions.

    What does it mean to be thankful for your health? A lot, I think. At its most basic level it can be a “There but by the grace of God go I” feeling we get when someone we know dies of a heart attack or gets cancer. The news jolts us into awareness of our mortality, health being what keeps us on the other side.

    Being thankful for our health, however, means more than gratitude for being alive itself. On yet another level, it means appreciating the capacities allowed by our health – the cognitive ability to practice our profession and remember our children’s names, the physical ability to walk up six flights of stairs when the elevator is being serviced (or when we just feel like it). It’s the security of knowing we can travel to remote places and deal with whatever conditions we encounter. It’s the freedom to put on a pair of skates or skis and try something new without getting wrapped around fear of frailty. It’s about confidence that we have the strength to move most of our own stuff when need arises and take care of our children, tend to our property, and still have energy to enjoy something of everyday life.

    Yet, I’d suggest health is even more than capacity itself – more than living, more than functioning. By extension, being thankful for our health means recognizing the deeper dimensions of health itself.

    A couple of weeks ago I differentiated health as an absence of obvious symptoms from vitality as a kind of full actualization of energy that feeds all areas of self and life. When we look at health from this vantage point, the question becomes whether we’re living out our well-being. If being grateful for something means appreciating it, are we living in full appreciation of our health or are we taking it for granted, leaving many layers of experience and capacity unexplored – and thereby, unacknowledged.

    I’m not trying to evoke any metaphysical suggestion here, but humor me with the illustration for a moment. Let’s say you gave two people the same gift. One person graciously thanked you in the moment but put it in the basement where it collected dust for a few decades. The other offered the same gratitude and put it in his/her living space, using it every day in some way for those decades. Who is more thankful, appreciative of the gift?

    I think it’s common to give lip service about gratitude for our health. We’re thankful of course – in theory. Might I suggest that gratitude is something we discover through practice in a lifetime of layers with deeper knowledge and familiarity, through challenge and peak moments – maybe not unlike a rich relationship.

    Sometimes I think people cut themselves off from this depth of gratitude by living outside of their bodies to some extent – as a result of trauma, distress or distortion. They take a parsing, hypervigilant, corrective perspective on their bodies and their condition – the body as something to be whipped into shape, deprived, pushed and monitored. That kind of animosity, I’ve found, tends to camouflage some sort of deep-seated fear.

    When we allow ourselves to wholly appreciate our health – appreciation being the full living out of gratitude, we use and develop our infinite capacities and likewise find infinite joy in its pleasures. Let’s face it – a utilitarian take on health cuts our physical experience off at the knees. We can not only allow ourselves to enjoy the little things – the sun on your back, the feeling of human touch, the runner’s high, a nap’s recharge, a holiday meal’s flavor, the mind’s recollections. In combination with our physical capacities, they’re all part of our inclusive health.

    As so many of us celebrate Thanksgiving here in the U.S., I’d offer this challenge to everyone today. Make the choice to cultivate gratitude for your health. Be more present to your health every day. Explore and expand your abilities. Live out your appreciation for your physical potential by developing it action by action, experiment by experiment. Embrace the small pleasures and challenge yourself to reach for even intimidating achievements andintermittent euphoria.

    Make a list later tonight (or whenever you’re moved to do so) of all that your health as done for you this year. What has your health allowed you to try, to experience, to practice, to see, to explore, to feel, to accomplish, to share, to create?

    I feel very blessed for the gift of regular touch.

    It wasn’t until I was caring for dying people, though, that I came to see how many people are actually touch-starved. Even some of those with family around them had not had enough touch in their lives. Some patients were desperate to hold or gently rub my hand every chance they could. A few of them had not felt a loving hug for a long time – years.

    I think that large parts of my success in growing close to the people I looked after were due to touch. As I scratched their backs, massaged their scalps, rubbed cream into their feet and legs, or brushed their hair, the ease between us naturally grew and without realising it, the personal nature of the conversations deepened.

    An Australian man, Juan Mann, began a practice years ago of giving free hugs to strangers. This movement then spread across the world. I recall spotting him one day in Pitt Street mall in Sydney and immediately went up and exchanged a hug. We both laughed and commented that we each give good hugs. That moment of touch broke up a busy disconnected day for me. Touch can do that in an instant.

    Sadly though, there seems to be non-official personal boundaries expected these days in society. But we can change that, one person at a time. A gentle touch on someone’s arm does not have to be intrusive. Gauging people’s boundaries by their response to that touch is possible too.

    We are tactile creatures. It is not only a natural desire that we are born with. It is an inherent need. Babies have died without touch. Adults do too. Their hearts break from the isolation.

    Share the gift of touch when you can. If you are uncomfortable about receiving touch yourself, please try to consider why and then learn to accept it.

    We all need touch. We all need hugs.

    As massage therapists, we all know the power of healthy touch, it's what keeps us in business. Always think with good intent when preforming massage therapy to massage clients because all energy leaks through.

    Humans experience an array of emotions, anything from happiness, to sadness to extreme joy and depression. Each one of these emotions creates a different feeling within the body. Or how about when we are thinking positive thoughts? What about when we are not emotionally charged to neither positive nor negative? Let’s explore how these affect our body and life.

    Positive vs. Negative
    Is there duality in our world? Sure, you could say there is to a degree, but mostly we spend a lot of time defining and judging what is to be considered as positive and what we consider to be as negative. The brain is a very powerful tool and as we define what something is or should be, we begin to have that result play out in our world. Have you ever noticed, for example that someone driving can get cut off and lose their lid, get angry and suddenly they are feeling negative, down and in bad mood? Whereas someone else can get cut off while driving and simply apply the brake slightly and move on with their day as if nothing happened. In this case, the same experience yet one sees it as negative while the other doesn’t. So are things innately positive and negative? Or do we define things as positive and negative?

    Cut The Perceptions As Much As Possible
    After thinking about it for a moment you might realize that there are in fact no positive or negative experiences other than what we define as such. Therefore our very perception of an experience or situation has the ultimate power as to how we will feel when it’s happening and how our bodies will be affected. While we can always work to move beyond our definitions of each experience and move into a state of mind/awareness/consciousness where we simply accept each experience for what it is and use it as a learning grounds for us, we may not be there yet and so it’s important to understand how certain emotions can affect our health.

    Mind Body Connection
    The connection between your mind and body is very powerful and although it cannot be visually seen, the effects your mind can have on your physical body are profound. We can have an overall positive mental attitude and deal directly with our internal challenges and in turn create a healthy lifestyle or we can be in negative, have self destructive thoughts and not deal with our internal issues, possibly even cloak those issues with affirmations and positivity without finding the route and in turn we can create an unhealthy lifestyle. Why is this?

    Our emotions and experiences are essentially energy and they can be stored in the cellular memory of our bodies. Have you ever experienced something in your life that left an emotional mark or pain in a certain area of your body? Almost as if you can still feel something that may have happened to you? It is likely because in that area of your body you still hold energy released from that experience that is remaining in that area. I came across an interesting chart that explores some possible areas that various emotions might affect the body.

    When you have a pain, tightness or injuries in certain areas, it’s often related to something emotionally you are feeling within yourself. At first glance it may not seem this way because we are usually very out of touch with ourselves and our emotions in this fast paced world, but it’s often the truth. When I’ve had chronic pains in my back, knees, neck or shoulders, it wasn’t exercise, physio or anything in a physical sense that healed it, it was when I dealt with the emotions behind it. I know this because I spent the time and money going to physio and even though I wanted and believed I would get better, something wasn’t being addressed still. The more I addressed the unconscious thought pattern and emotions throughout my body, the more things loosened up and pain went away.

    When you get sick or are feeling a lot of tightness and pain, often times our body is asking us to observe yourself and find peace once again within yourself and your environment. It’s all a learning and growing process we don’t have to judge nor fear.

    You Have The Power

Ask yourself, how can this help me to see or learn something? Can I use this to shift my perception? Clear some emotion within myself? Realize something within another and accept it? Whatever it may be, instead of simply reacting, slow things down and observe. You will find you have the tools to process emotions and illness quickly when you see them for what they are and explore why they came up. If you believe you will get sick all the time, and believe you have pain because it’s all out of your control, you will continue to have it all in an uncontrollable manner until you realize the control you have over much of what we attract within the body.

Also watch out for allergic reactions to new medications which can show up as suddenly thick nails.

    Split nails

    Split nails aren’t just occasionally chipped or shut in doors. Instead, these nails seem to flake away in layers.
